Lazy Eye :

Lazy Eye also known as amblyopia is a condition in which there is reduced vision in one eye as the brain favors one eye over the other. Lazy eye can be due to various factors like strabismus or crossed eyes, unequal refractive errors like nearsightedness and farsightedness , congenital cataract, anisometropia, trauma to the eye, corneal haziness etc. Signs and symptoms of lazy eye includes low sensitivity to contrast and motion, blurry vision, eye strain, double vision, difficulty judging distances, loss of depth perception and avoiding activities that require vision. The risk factors for lazy eye are premature birth and low birth weight, family history, eye injuries or surgeries, congenital conditions like Down syndrome etc. Management is by patch therapy by covering the stronger eye, atropine therapy, correction of refraction, strabismus surgery(if necessary). Early detection and management is essential for effective management of the lazy eye.
