Knee Replacement :
Knee replacement can be called knee arthroplasty. In the knee replacement procedure, the damaged tissues of the knee joint will be removed and replaced with an artificial joint or prosthesis. There will be two different types of knee replacement procedures, such as total knee replacement and partial knee replacement. The conditions that can be treated with knee arthroplasty include stiffness, swelling, joint pain, arthritis, trouble in moving the knee, and, in rare cases, knee replacement may be done for bone fractures in the knee. Before doing the knee replacement, there will be some tests to be done, like physical examination, blood tests, a CT scan, an electrocardiogram, an X-ray of the knee, and an MRI scan. During the procedure of knee replacement, anesthesia will be given, and the surgeon will remove the damaged part of the bone and cartilage and then insert a prosthetic knee joint. Also inserts a spacer for creating a cartilage-like cushion surface, and also reshapes the patella bone.

What are the different types of procedures for knee replacement?
The main types of knee replacement procedures include:
- Total Knee Replacement (TKR): The entire knee joint is replaced with artificial components, including the femoral, tibial, and patellar components. It is mainly done for advanced arthritis or severe joint damage.
- Partial Knee Replacement (PKR): Only the damaged part of the knee joint is replaced, usually the medial or lateral compartment. PKR is done when arthritis is limited to one area of the knee, which helps preserve healthy tissue.
- Minimally Invasive Knee Replacement: Smaller incisions are used during the surgery, resulting in faster recovery and less scarring. The rest of the procedure is similar to TKR or PKR.
- Bilateral Knee Replacement: Both knees are replaced in separate surgeries several months apart. It is done to treat knee arthritis in both the knees.
- Revision Knee Replacement: This is done when a previous knee replacement has failed, or the components need replacement due to wear & tear or complications.
What are the best knee replacement treatment options in Kolkata?
The best knee replacement treatment options depend on the individual's condition, age, and overall health. Here are some available treatment options include
- Total Knee Replacement (TKR): For advanced knee arthritis or severe joint damage. It provides long-lasting pain relief and improved joint function.
- Partial Knee Replacement (PKR): Suitable for individuals with localized arthritis and some healthy knee tissue. It can offer a quicker recovery and less post-operative pain.
- Minimally Invasive Surgery: Results in shorter hospital stays and faster recovery, but not suitable for everyone
- Customized knee implants: Based on the patient's anatomy, improve fit and function.
- Robotic-Assisted Surgery: Robotics-assisted procedures improve surgical precision and alignment.
- Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy: Post-surgery rehabilitation for successful outcomes. Physical therapy helps regain strength, mobility, and function.
- Lifestyle and Weight Management: A healthy and active lifestyle reduces knee joint stress and contributes to long-term relief.
