Keratitis :

Inflammation of the clear dome shaped tissue of the eye called as cornea is referred to as keratitis. keratitis is classified into two types based on the cause namely infectious and non infectious keratitis. Infectious keratitis is caused by bacteria,fungi,virus or parasitic infection, on the contrary a non infectious keratitis can be caused by eye injury, prolonged wearing of contacts, a compromised immune system, and intense exposure to sunlight.

Although keratitis is a common and a treatable condition if left untreated it may lead corneal blindness. Symptoms include eye redness, eye pain, excess tear discharge, sensitivity to light, decreased vision, blurred vision, irritation and difficulty in opening the eye. Treatment mainly depends on the cause of the keratitis involving antibiotic antibacterial, antifungal, or antiviral therapy. While keratitis can happen to anyone, one can follow certain precautionary measures to prevent the conditions, which includes avoid frequent touching your eyes, avoid using over the counter eye drops,remove your contacts before swimming, avoid going to bed with your contacts, and replace your contacts regularly.
