GB Syndrome :
Guillain-Barre Syndrome, or GBS, is an acute, rare condition in which the immune system attacks peripheral nerves that are large nerve bundles located outside of the brain and spinal cord. The cause of GBS has not yet been found but it is often associated with some form of infection which can be viral or bacterial infections such as influenza, stomach flu, or even post-vaccination. The primary symptoms of GBS include weakness, tingling sensations, or paralysis that are more frequently start in the lower limbs and can spread to the upper body and arms. In the worst case GBS can also cause shortness of breath when the muscles of the respiratory system are affected. Symptoms usually take days or weeks to appear. Treatment includes plasmapheresis, or intravenous immunoglobulin, while in some cases hospitalization is required for most GBS patients. Recovery may take several months, and some may even persist with weakness and other complications. Early diagnosis and a prompt treatment play a key role in treating the GB syndrome.

What are the causes of GB Syndrome?
Some of the most common causes of GB syndrome include the following:
Infections: GB Syndrome occurs after an infection, either bacterial or viral. The immune response generated against the infection can sometimes attack components of the peripheral nerves, leading to nerve inflammation and damage. Infections that have been linked to GB syndrome include:
- Campylobacter jejuni (foodborne illness)
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)
- Influenza virus
- Zika virus
Vaccinations: Although rare, GB Syndrome may be seen after certain vaccinations, such as influenza and DPT.
Abnormal Immune Responses: As seen in other autoimmune diseases, even in GB Syndrome, the immune system produces antibodies that target proteins found on the myelin sheath (the protective covering of nerve fibres) or sometimes even the nerve cells.
Other Triggers: Other factors that have been associated with the development of GB Syndrome include:
- Surgery
- Physical injury
- Exposure to certain chemicals or toxins
- Pregnancy
What are the symptoms of GB Syndrome?
GB Syndrome can have a wide range of symptoms that vary in severity and intensity between individuals. In GB Syndrome, the muscle weakness usually starts in the legs and progresses to other body parts. Some of the symptoms associated with GB Syndrome include:
- Muscle Weakness is a prominent symptom that usually begins in the legs and may progress to the arms and upper body. The weakness can be mild or severe and affects both sides of the body.
- Tingling and Numbness: Tingling sensations (paresthesias) and Numbness in their extremities (pins and needles.)
- Loss of Reflexes: The knee-jerk reflex may become diminished or absent.
- Achy or Cramping Pain: Muscle pain or cramping can be very uncomfortable.
- Difficulty Walking: difficulty walking, standing, or maintaining balance as the disease progresses.
- Muscle Pain: Deep aching or soreness can be seen in some cases.
- Difficulty with Fine Movements: Performing tasks that require fine motor skills, such as writing, buttoning clothes, or picking up small objects, becomes difficult as the disease progresses.
- Difficulty with Facial Movements
- Difficulty Swallowing and Speaking: swallowing, speaking, or controlling the muscles of the throat may be seen in some
- Respiratory Symptoms: In severe cases, the muscles responsible for breathing are affected, leading to breathing difficulties and respiratory failure.
