Difficulty in Swallowing :

Difficulty in swallowing or DYSPHAGIA is a condition where an individual experiances difficulty or discomfort while swallowing food, liquids or sometimes even saliva. There are various causes for dysphagia that includes neurological (like stroke, Parkinson's disease, ALS etc,), esophageal strictures, narrowing , tonsillitis, pharyngitis, peritonsillar abscess, stomatitis, tongue cancer, paralysis of soft palate, Bell's palsy, Xerostomia/dry mouth (eg: Sjogren's syndrome), Pterson-Kelly syndrome, muscle disorders like achalasia, neuro muscular symptom complexes , functional dysphagia (no organic cause can be found). etc,.

Some patients have undiagnosed dysphagia leading to pulmonary aspiration further leading to aspiration pneumonia. Other symptoms include inability to control food or saliva in the mouth, difficulty in initiating the swallow , coughing, frequent pneumonia, unexplained weight loss, choking, gurgly or wet voice after swallowing, nasal regurgitation. Complications include pneumonia, aspiration, dehydration and weight loss. Dysphagia is managed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists and the caused is identified and treated.
