Depression in Adults :

Depression (major depressive disorder ) is a common and serious mental disorder in which there is a persistent feeling of sadness , hopelessness and loss of interest in activities. Symptoms of depression can vary from mild to severe and can appear differently in each person. They include feeling sad , empty or hopeless, losing interest or pleasure in activities that were previously enjoyed, a significant change in appetite (eating much less or more than usual) leading to weight loss or gain, sleep changes, decreased energy or increased tiredness or fatigue , feeling worthless or excessively guilty, difficulty thinking or concentrating, forgetfulness, and or difficulty in making minor decisions, thoughts of death , suicidal ideation or suicide attempts.

There is no specific cause for depression but includes various factors into consideration like genetic (depression can run in families), biochemical (levels of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine), personality and other environmental factors. Management of depression includes anti-depressant medication, psycotherapy , ECT (Electro convulsive therapy) is found useful for the cases of resistant depression.
