Congenital heart disease in adults :
Adult congenital heart disease refers to heart defects that the baby is born with but continue to exist into adulthood and could not have been determined at birth. Examples include holes in the heart where there's an atrial septal defect, valve abnormalities like mitral valve replacement and abnormal connections between heart blood vessels. Some adults appear with symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, or arrhythmia, while others remain symptom free. Diagnosis typically requires echocardiograms, MRI, or heart catheterization. Treatment is premised on the nature and severity of the defect and could be either via medication, catheter based procedures, or surgery. Follow up is maintained with a cardiologist and regular follow ups are made throughout life in order to monitor and manage the condition.
