Cleft Palate :

Cleft palate is the orofacial birth defect in which the baby has an opening or a cleft in the palate/ roof of the mouth. It can be limited to the soft uvula portion or extend into the hard palate portion. Babies who are born with these cleft palate has difficulty in feedings, swallowing, and often have chronic ear infections, dental problems and nasal speaking voice. Some of the risk factors for babies acquiring the cleft plate are pregnant woman who has long standing history of diabetes, obesity, alcohol or tobacco consumption during pregnancy, and genetic markers from both the parents.

Cleft palate is a result of the failure of fusion of tissue folds during second and third trimesters. It can be surgically managed with group of doctors including oral and maxillofacial surgeon. For prevention of the such abnormalities, care should be taken by woman who are planning for pregnancy with regular check-ups.
