Carotid Artery Stenting :
Carotid artery stenting is a minimally invasive procedure that opens narrowed or blocked arteries in the neck, which supply blood to brain in hope of reducing the risk of stroke. A balloon which is very small in size is passed into the artery and shall be inflated till the artery is open. Then a stent, essentially a small mesh tube, also may be placed. It restores normal cerebral blood flow that could prevent strokes and enhance blood circulation to the brain. Some of the risk factors which may include during or post procedure are stoke, heart attack and occasionally even death. A proper counselling needs to be done to the patient attenders before taking the patient to the carotid angioplasty. Pre procedure patient might be advised to undergo tests like carotid doppler to asses the percentage of stenosis.A cardiologist or an interventional radiologist will be able to perform this procedure sucessfully, Surgery would be advised if the carotid stenting fails.
