Carotid Angioplasty :
Carotid angioplasty is a surgical procedure that helps manage the problem of narrowed carotid arteries. Carotid arteries are the major arteries which supply blood to the brain and lie on each side of neck. Coronary angioplasty is recommended to treat carotid artery disease, clogged carotid artery, and when the endarterectomy procedure is not ideal to locate the stenosis. This procedure is suitable for those who already underwent endarterectomy and are newly experiencing narrowing after the surgery. Carotid angioplasty is preceded by conducting various investigations like ultrasound, MRA, or CTA, and carotid angiography. The side effects that may arise from carotid angioplasty include new narrowing of the carotid artery, transient ischemic attack or stroke, bleeding, and blood clots. The postoperative care involves maintaining a healthy weight, controlling high blood pressure and diabetes, lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, reducing the intake of cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and exercising regularly.
