Best Doctors for Brain Stroke Treatment in Kolkata

Brain Stroke

A stroke, also known as a brain attack, is a severe life-threatening condition that occurs when the blood supply to your brain is disrupted. This can happen either by a blockage in the blood vessels or bleeding in your brain. The rupture or blockage prevents the brain from getting oxygen and nutrients from the blood. When this happens, brain cells start dying within minutes. Prompt treatment can reduce the brain damage caused by a stroke.

What are the causes of Brain Stroke?

The cause of a stroke depends on its type.

  • Ischemic strokes usually occur when clots block the blood vessels in the brain. These clots can form for different reasons like fatty deposits in the blood vessels (atherosclerosis), clotting disorders, irregular heartbeats (atrial fibrillation), certain heart defects, or problems in small brain blood vessels.
  • Hemorrhagic strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and causes bleeding. High blood pressure, brain aneurysms, brain tumours, or diseases that affect blood vessels in the brain can lead to hemorrhagic strokes.
  • Some individuals may experience a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain, known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), which does not lead to lasting symptoms.
  • Particular lifestyle and health conditions can also increase the risk of stroke. These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, migraines, and drug misuse.

What are the types of Brain Strokes?

Ischemic Stroke (Clots):

  • It happens when the vessel carrying blood to the brain gets blocked.
  • This type makes up 87% of all strokes.

Hemorrhagic Stroke (Bleeds):

  • It occurs when a weak blood vessel ruptures.
  • Usually caused by either aneurysms or arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), which are weak spots in blood vessels.
  • Uncontrolled blood pressure is the leading cause of this type of stroke.

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA):

  • A temporary clot causes it and is often called a "warning stroke".
  • Treat this as a serious sign that a stroke might happen in future.

Brain Stem Stroke:

  • It happens in the brain stem and can affect both sides of the body.
  • It can leave a person in a state where they can't speak or move below the neck, known as a "locked-in" state.

Cryptogenic Stroke:

  • This stroke will occur without a known cause.

Frequently asked questions

Common signs and symptoms of stroke include:

  • Paralysis or numbness on one side of the face, arm or leg
  • Trouble speaking or loss of speaking ability or slurred speech
  • Confusion and difficulty in understanding what others are saying
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Lack of coordination
  • Trouble walking
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Nausea and vomiting

The best treatment for a brain stroke is determined by its type. Ischemic strokes are often treated with thrombolytic drugs or mechanical thrombectomy. Hemorrhagic strokes require blood pressure management and sometimes surgery to relieve brain pressure. Stroke rehabilitation, including speech, physical, and occupational therapy, is also important for better recovery.

The cost of treating a brain stroke can include hospitalization, diagnostic tests (such as CT scans, MRI, and angiography), medications, rehabilitation, therapy, and follow-up care. For brain stroke treatment in Kolkata, the initial MRI scan may cost around Rs. 10,000 - 12,000. If the stroke is ischemic, thrombolytic treatment may cost Rs. 75,000 - 90,000. For hemorrhagic stroke, hospitalization costs can be Rs. 1.5 - 1.8 lakhs. Post-discharge physiotherapy is about Rs. 20,000 - 25,000 per month.

While one cannot guarantee complete prevention, certain steps can be taken to reduce the risk of a stroke and prevent it from occurring. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding risky behaviours like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, managing health conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and seeking regular check-ups can significantly lower the risk of a stroke.
