Brachial plexus injuries :
Injuries of the brachial plexus occur when the network of nerves which controls the arm and hand is torn. It comes from the spinal cord in the neck and trails down into the arm. Several types of trauma, including falls and sports accidents may cause injuries that could arise from complications during childbirth, in which excessive pulling tears or stretches nerves. The patient might be suffering from weakness, numbness, and even paralysis of the arm or hand as affected by its movement and sensations.
Most brachial plexus injuries vary from slight nerve stretching to tearing the nerves completely, known as avulsion. A diagnosis is usually established on physical examination and sometimes through MRI or ultrasound imaging studies.The treatment will depend on the severity of injury one has suffered. For the minor injuries, patients might just be able to recover through physical therapy. Major injuries may require surgery repair due to damaged nerves. The surgery would include restoration of function and reduction of pain. Early intervention will give a high chance of recovery, and continuous rehabilitation allows a patient to regain strength and mobility in his or her affected limb.
