Blood in vomit :
Blood in vomit, also termed as hematemesis, is an emergency condition that occurs due to bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract. The primary causes of blood in vomit include bleeding ulcers like peptic ulcers which occur due to bacterial infection, acute inflammation, enlarged blood vessels that rupture due to portal hypertension, mallory weiss syndrome, traumatic injury, chronic pancreatitis, angiodysplasias, certain medications like non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and aspirin and tumors of the esophagus, stomach and pancreas. Blood in vomit results in severe blood loss, which can be managed by blood transfusions, IV fluids and, in severe cases by oxygen support. The patient should visit a doctor and seek immediate medical care if blood in vomit is associated with other complaints like dizziness or light headedness, severe abdominal pain and severe chest pain, disorientation or mental confusion.
