ASD Surgery :
An Atrial Septal Defect refers to a hole between the heart's upper two chambers. This heart defect is usually present from birth. The hole can close on its own within some months of birth. But some children are born with a large hole in the heart that does not close. In such cases, the heart and lungs are forced to work harder to circulate blood. An ASD surgery is a procedure in which the hole in the heart is closed.
Before the procedure begins, the patient is made to sleep with the help of anaesthesia. Next, the surgeon cuts the chest open and spreads the ribcage. Then, the surgeon inserts a special device called an endoscope into the heart and locates the hole. Finally, the surgeon closes the hole with a plug, patch or stitches via the endoscope.
