Anal cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the anus, which is the end of the rectum. It is a relatively rare type of cancer, accounting for less than 5% of all colorectal cancers.
The symptoms of anal cancer can include anal itching, bleeding, and pain. A lump or mass may also be felt in the anus. Other symptoms can include discharge or mucus, changes in bowel habits, and anal discomfort or pain.
Anal cancer can affect anyone, but it is more common in people over the age of 50 and those with a history of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Other risk factors include having many sexual partners, smoking, and having a history of certain types of cancer, such as cervical cancer.
Anal dysplasia is a precancerous condition that can lead to anal cancer. It occurs when cells in the anus undergo abnormal changes that make them more likely to become cancerous. Anal dysplasia is usually caused by HPV infection, and it is more common in people with a history of HPV related diseases, such as genital warts or cervical cancer.
