Pterygium :
Pterygium is an abnormal pinkish-white growth on conjunctiva of the eyes, which is non cancerous in nature. It looks like a triangularly shaped fleshy projection on the white part of the eyes. Pterygium is otherwise called Surfer's eye. It induces a sensation of grittiness or dryness in the eyes besides inflammation and discomfort. Pterygium is developed due to prolonged exposure to environmental factors like UV rays, wind or dust, and genetic mutations. An ophthalmologist or eye specialist performs complete eye and vision exams to rule out other eye diseases. A tissue biopsy may confirm the nature of the tissue growth. Timely diagnosis and treatment with NSAIDs, artificial tears and UV protective eyewear can help to control the symptoms of the pterygium. However, if the growth disturbs the vision and causes constant discomfort and trouble to perform everyday activities, it can be surgically excised. Recurrence of pterygium is common and requires additional surgical excision. Hence regular follow-ups with eye surgeons is mandatory to monitor for regrowth of the tissue. If left untreated, pterygium may slowly progress to cause vision loss and other complications.
