Peripheral Arterial Disease :
Peripheral arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body. Peripheral artery disease is a condition caused by the narrowing or blockage of peripheral arteries that supply blood to hands and legs due to the blockage of fat deposits and other substances. Complete blockage of these arteries may sometimes lead to the death of the tissue(gangrene). Major risk factors that lead to PAD are a family history of PAD, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, age exceeding 50 years, obesity, and smoking. They show symptoms like mild to extreme pain, muscle pain or cramps, leg numbness or weakness, change in skin colour of the affected region, sores, and frequent infections. They can be diagnosed through physical examination by a doctor, vascular ultrasound, pulse volume recording (PVR), and angiogram. Early diagnosis and management of PAD by Vascular specialists or Cardiologists help to treat the symptoms and reduce the risk of serious complications.
