Astigmatism :

Astigmatism is an eye condition which is a type of refractive error where there is a problem in rotational symmetry. The exact cause of astigmatism is not known however studies show a small relation with the genetic factors. Signs and symptoms include distortion or blurring of the vision, eye strain, double vision, frequent headaches, difficulty driving at night times, squint eye, eye fatigue, etc. Astigmatism can be congenital or acquired and they are mainly classified into three types which are myopic astigmatism, hyperopic astigmatism and mixed astigmatism.

Diagnosis can be done through routine eye examination for visual acuity, keratometer and retinoscope. Treatment include powered eye glasses, contact lens for improving the visual field of a person and refractive error correction surgery is the permanent solution for the people suffering from astigmatism. If left untreated this condition can lead to amblyopia.
