Uterine Fibroids :
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous and small tissue growths in the uterus. They are further classified as intramural, submucosal, subserosal and pedunculated fibroids based on their positions. Some of the common early signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids include heavy menses, pelvic pain, frequent bloating, frequent urination, constipation and mood swings. Hormonal fluctuations, genetic predisposition, age and obesity play a significant role in developing uterine fibroids. A gynecologist evaluates the symptoms by conducting a pelvic exam, endometrial biopsy and radiographic imaging studies. Surveillance with medication therapy is highly recommended for initial phases. If the condition worsens, surgical intervention with procedures like myomectomy and hysterectomy is preferred. Uterine artery embolization and magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound surgery are the latest advancements in the surgical management of uterine fibroids.
