Missed Periods :
Missed periods are medically termed as amenorrhea. If a woman has never had a menstrual period or menarche, then the condition is referred to as primary amenorrhea. If a woman misses periods after a history of regular menses, then the condition is called secondary amenorrhea. Significant amounts of stress and anxiety, weight fluctuations, poor dietary habits, excessive or lack of physical activities, hormonal changes, travel or schedule changes or genetic variations are contributing factors to missed periods. Underlying medical conditions such as poly cystic ovarian disorder, thyroid disorder, premature ovarian failure, uterine or cervical abnormalities, pregnancy may cause episodes of prolonged amenorrhea. A gynecologist evaluates the clinical symptoms and conducts investigatory labs to rule out differential diagnoses. Conservative medical management with lifestyle modifications may be suggested as a choice of treatment.
