Lump in the Neck :
Lump in the neck is a mass in the neck can be caused by several factors such as infections, lymphadenopathy, thyroid issues, or tumors. The condition of this swelling is often due to viral and bacterial infection that can be caused by a common cold and swollen lymph nodes associated with an infection. Thyroid nodules that are non-cancerous though they may need surveillance and cysts located behind the neck are the other possible causes. Symptoms which may be associated with a neck lump can include tenderness and pain on palpation, trouble swallowing, change in voice, or any other phenomenon. Some neck lumps are painless and are coincidentally discovered. It is essential to determine whether there is any presence of associated symptoms like fever, night sweats, or unexplained loss of weight as these symptoms may represent a worse condition. Diagnosis would involve a physical examination, imaging tests like ultrasonography , CT scans, and if needed a biopsy to define the type of the mass. Treatment would depend on the underlying cause. Infections may respond to antibiotics, malignant tumors might require surgical intervention or other therapies.
