Some types of muscular dystrophy are present since birth, while other type develop in adulthood. The symptoms of muscular dystrophy depend on its type, but all types cause weakness in the muscles. The condition can also cause stiffness or looseness of the joints, permanently tight muscles and tissues and muscle pain. It can be diagnosed with a combination of physical, neurological and muscle exams. A doctor may also require tests like genetic tests, blood tests, EMG and muscle biopsies to provide an accurate diagnosis. There is no cure for this condition, but therapy, medicines, and surgery can reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life.
