Cirrhosis :
Cirrhosis is nothing but the scarring of the liver where the liver stops to function. Cirrhosis results from chronic alcohol abuse, genetic disorders, autoimmune biliary disease or even infections by hepatitis B and C viruses, and also due to fatty liver disease. Symptoms might not arise in the early stages, but as the condition progresses, individuals are likely to present with abdominal pain, fatigue, redness of palms, jaundice or yellowing of the skin and eyes, swelling of the legs and abdomen, unexplained weight loss, low urine output and blood vomiting. Diagnosis is done by basic blood investigations, biopsy and imaging tests like ultrasound, CT scan and MRI. Treatment depends upon the cause of cirrhosis which may include antiviral medications, corticosteroids and immunosuppressants. In the worst scenario, liver transplant would be the only choice. Early diagnosis along with lifestyle modifications and slowing the progression of cirrhosis would greatly improve the quality of life.
