Thyroidectomy :

It is the surgical removal of a part or the entire thyroid gland with a function that exists in the neck and is involved with metabolism, growth, and development by the secretion of hormones. It is normally recommended in conditions of advanced thyroid cancer, large goiter, or hyperthyroidism that does not respond to medications. The procedure may take the form of a total thyroidectomy, which means it is almost complete removal of the gland, or as a partial thyroidectomy, in which part of the gland is removed.

It is mostly performed under general anesthesia and is taken over a course of hours depending on the extent of the surgery. Monitoring post-operative care requires close vigil for complication like bleed, infection, or injury to surrounding structures including the parathyroid and vocal cords. There will be minimal swelling and discomfort post-operatively, which could be managed by some mild pain medication. This patient having undergone total thyroidectomy would definitely require hormone replacement for normal metabolism to ensue. This would require a series of follow-up visits with the endocrinologist confirming the levels of thyroid hormone are well controlled and further adjustments of treatments for optimum health are administered.
