Pulmonary edema :
Pulmonary edema is a condition that develops when fluid accumulates in the air sacs of the lungs. This accumulation of fluid makes breathing difficult. In a majority of the cases, pulmonary edema develops secondary to heart problems. But in a few, pulmonary edema can develop secondary to pneumonia, trauma to the chest wall, sepsis, liver disease, kidney disease, exposure to certain toxins or medications, and travel to or exercising at high altitudes.
Pulmonary edema can develop either suddenly or overtime. Pulmonary edema that develops suddenly (called acute pulmonary edema), is life-threatening, and is considered to be a medical emergency. Some of the signs and symptoms of acute pulmonary edema include shortness of breath that worsens during activity or when lying down, a cough with blood in the sputum, wheezing, and the development of cold, clammy skin. Some of the symptoms of long-term (chronic) pulmonary edema include, breathlessness that awakens you from sleep, tiredness, swelling in the legs.
Seek immediate medical attention if you have symptoms of acute pulmonary edema. Treatment of chronic pulmonary edema usually depends on the cause. Talk to a doctor to know more.
