PTCA and stenting :
PTCA is an abbreviated form of Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty. It is a surgical cardiac procedure performed during the treatment of coronary artery disease, angina, myocardial infarction, and stenosis to modify the blood vessel for easy movement of blood to heart muscles. During PTCA, a small catheter is inserted through veins of the arms or legs to reach the blocked area of the coronary blood vessel. Once the blockage is assessed, the catheter inflates a balloon to destroy the plaque build-up and enlarge the access. PTCA is often associated with the placement of stents to retain the benefits of angioplasty. A stent is a form of mesh tube that is placed post the balloon deflation and catheter removal. PTCA with stent placement can be associated with postoperative complications like restenosis, dislodgement of stent, profuse bleeding, and infections.
