Proteinuria :
Proteinuria is an abnormal condition characterized by the excessive amount of protein in the urine and may be indicative of a possible kidney disorder. The main function of the kidneys is to remove various products of waste from the blood but retain proteins, such as albumin, that are essential for life. The damages in proteinuria compromise this filtering process to permit proteins to pass into the urine. Some of the normal causes of proteinuria include glomerulonephritis, diabetic nephropathy, and hypertension. Transient proteinuria can be due to fever, strenuous exercise, or dehydration. But constant proteinuria may indicate chronic injury to the kidneys. At times, the symptoms may not even be severe but they can be frothy urine, pitting oedema in the hands, feet, or face due to fluid accumulation, or even fatigue. Diagnosis often comes with elevated proteins in urine tests. Treatment is primarily aimed at the cause like blood pressure control, diabetes control, and use of ACE inhibitors to prevent damage caused to the kidneys. For extensive damage, intensive interventions in the form of dialysis or kidney transplant will be used to treat the damaged kidneys for an improvement in outcome.
