Myomectomy :

Myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids also known as leiomyomas. It can be of different types like abdominal myomectomy(surgery through an abdominal incision), laparoscopic myomectomy( surgery using a laparoscope, minimally invasive), robotic myomectomy, hysteroscopic myomectomy( surgery through the vagina and cervix using a hysteroscope), Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) . Unlike hysterectomy where the entire uterus is removed here the uterus is saved and only fibriods are removed . All the fibroids do not need the surgical removal.

It is done in case of symptomatic fibriods causing heavy bleeding, pain , pressure, large or growing fibroids ,fibriods that effect fertility or pregnancy, recurring fibriods after previous surgery etc. The possible complications include bleeding , risk of adhesion or scar formation on the uterus or within its cavity and might need c-section delivery later. The size and number of fibroids present in the uterus determine the outcome and any further complications in the surgery. It is conducted by a trained obstetrician and gynaecologist after necessary investigations(CT, MRI or ultrasound scan, hysteroscopy etc.) are done
