Mastectomy is defined as surgical removal of a part or the entire breast due to an underlying pathology. Mastectomy is usually done as a part of treatment in breast cancer and in other conditions like extensive benign disease of breast and as prophylactic treatment in women with high risk for developing breast cancer. Depending on the stage and type of the cancer in the patient mastectomy can be of different types ie,. total mastectomy, radical mastectomy,simple mastectomy, palliative simple mastectomy, toilet mastectomy, double mastectomy and nipple sparing mastectomy etc.Mastectomy is a major surgical procedure done under general anesthesia conducted by a surgical oncologist. Breast reconstruction and other procedures can be done with silicone implants or autologous tissue after removal of the cancer tissue by a plastic surgeon. Regular follow up with the oncologist is necessary to monitor remission of the breast cancer.
