Lumbar Disc herniation :
Lumbar Disc herniation commonly called as lumbar slipped disc is a medical condition where disc between two lumbar spines bulges and exerts pressure on the surrounding nerves. Some common causes of lumbar disc herniation are elderly age as there is wear and tear of the disc, frequent bending or lifting of heavy objects in wrong posture, over weight, genetic causes, tobacco smoking. Signs and symptoms include pain which is radiating type due to compression of surrounding nerve, numbness, weakness of the muscles, difficulty in walking, standing and other activities for long times.
Diagnosis can be done by thorough clinical examination and history taking along with imaging techniques lie x- ray, MRI scan, CT scan, EMG. Treatment of lumbar disc hernia is mostly symptomatic which include non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, steroids, pain killers, physiotherapy along with adequate rest and mild physical exercises. If medical management does not help surgical intervention may be needed to remove the bulged area of the disc to relieve the pressure.
