Leprosy :
Leprosy, also called as Hansen's disease, is an infectious disease that affects the eyes, muscles, nerves, respiratory tract and skin. Leprosy is categorized into several types such as tuberculoid ( paucibacillary) leprosy, lepromatous (multibacillary) leprosy and borderline (dimorphous) leprosy. Leprosy is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium leprae. The significant signs of leprosy include purple or red nodules or lumps, patches of skin with raised edges, different from the surrounding skin and appear pale, stiff, red, thick, discolored and swollen or numb, paralysis or weakness, painless ulcers or sores on the bottom of the feet, enlarged nerves, vision loss and other eye issues and loss of eyebrows or eyelashes. To diagnose leprosy, various investigations such as blood tests, nerve conduction tests and skin biopsy. The treatment methods to manage leprosy involves prescribing antibiotics like dapsone, rifampin and clofazimine.
