Irregular Periods :
Irregular periods refer to menstrual cycles that are different than a normal 28 to 35 day cycle in length, timing or regularity. Hormonal imbalances, weight fluctuations, stress levels and excessive exercise or medical issues such as polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS), thyroid problems and uterine fibroids can cause this condition. Irregular periods can also be brought about by other stages in life like puberty, breastfeeding or as you are getting close to menopause. Symptoms include changes in cycle length, missing periods , metrorrhagia (spotting between cycles) or menorrhagia (heavy bleeding). Occasional Irregularity is normal but to have a frequent irregular periods means there might be something that is not right and needs immediate medical attention. The course of treatment is based on the reason. The therapeutic option could be hormonal therapy like birth control pills to help regularize the cycle and some lifestyle changes like weight loss, stress management and healthy eating habits also help. Eating balanced meals with weight loss can also help in correcting the menstrual cycles. Once an underlying condition is diagnosed, the treatments will vary depending on the cause.
