Esophageal varices :
The oesophagus is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. It is also called the food pipe. Oesophageal varices is a condition in which the veins in this tube get damaged and swell up. It is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition since the veins can burst open and bleed. The condition usually develops in individuals who have liver disease, specifically high blood pressure in the portal vein of the liver. Oesophageal varices do not cause any symptoms until they burst open. Burst veins in the food pipe can cause paleness, weakness, vomiting of blood, and blood in the stools. Doctors suspect oesophageal varices if they notice signs of liver disease, such as jaundice, swelling in the legs, ascites and itching without rashes. It is diagnosed with imaging exams like MRA and upper endoscopy. Treatment can control the bleeding and prevent future bleeding.
