COPD :
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) is a disease that damages the lungs over time, causing loss of elasticity in airways and air sacs of lungs, inflammation, scarring, narrowing of airways, thick mucus, and destruction of walls between alveoli. Types of COPD are emphysema, when there is an enlargement of alveoli with shortness of breath as the most common symptom, and chronic bronchitis, when there is an inflammation in the airways with cough as the most common symptom. Symptoms of COPD are persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, barrel-shaped chest, and bluish skin. It may caused by smoking, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, air pollution, and exposure to dust. Risk factors include older age people, exposure to air pollution, chemicals, dust, and a history of respiratory infections. Complications of COPD are pneumonia, high levels of carbon dioxide and low levels of oxygen in the blood, respiratory failure, pulmonary hypertension, right-sided heart failure, collapsed lung, and increased production of red blood cells.
