Chorea :
Chorea is a movement disorder of the neural type that causes involuntary and unpredictable movements affecting a part or sections of the body. These movements are often described as jerky or writhing, with tics having been described as movements similar to dance-like movements though occasionally minimal. Coordination and purposeful movements can be quite easily affected. The degrees of chorea may vary, and speech, posture, and gait may all be affected. The condition can be caused by a variety of factors. For example, it can be a part of genetic disorders. Other causes are also linked to autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, infections, such as rheumatic fever, and induced movements by medication like antipsychotics. Some patients may present with the disorder after a stroke or due to other injuries to the brain.
The symptoms may range from rapid and random movements, inability to maintain posture, emotional changes, to cognitive issues. Stress tends to make the movements worsen, but they tend to improve with rest.Management for chorea is purely symptomatic depending on the underlying cause usually, medicines to tone down the movement, for example antipsychotics or dopamine-depleting agents, will be included. Besides physical therapy would promote coordination and improvement in mobility. Early diagnosis and intervention are important in helping a patient manage symptoms and consequently improve the quality of life for patients who have chorea. A doctor should be consulted in order to formulate the right course of treatment best suited to the individual's needs.
