Cervical Cerclage :

The procedure is usually performed from 12 to 24 weeks of gestation but may vary due to the condition of the patient. The technique of cerclage involves two different kinds- the transvaginal and the transabdominal technique. In most cases the procedure is done through the transvaginal technique where a stitch is put inside the vagina, and the transabdominal technique, which is not that common, is utilized only in complicated cases.

Candidates for cervical cerclage include women with cervical incompetence, previous second-trimester loss, or ultrasonographic short cervix. Most of the patients after the procedure are followed up for symptoms of possible complications that might be occurring, such as infection or preterm labor.

Recovery may involve minimal exercise and post-delivery appointments to monitor the cervix and the status of pregnancy. If pregnancy is already at term or labor, the process of cerclage is reversed. This can make all the difference for women who are considered at risk for premature birth, allowing many of them to carry their pregnancies to term.
