Appendicitis in Children :
Appendicitis is a condition that occurs when the appendix , which is located in lower abdomen becomes inflamed or filled up with pus.Appendicitis is most common among children between the ages of 9-15. The condition is rarely observed in children between 2- 8 years of age. Common cause are : obstruction , infection. Children with appendicitis present with the following symptoms : Lower abdominal pain , loss of appetite , low to moderate fever , nausea ,vomiting ,, pain while urinating , constipation , abdominal cramps, swelling in the abdomen. Risk factors associated with appendicitis are : Age group of 10- 30 are more vulnerable ,infection in the GI tract ,and Trauma. If the appendicitis is left untreated it could burst and the infected fluids can leak into abdominal cavity which can be life threatening .Diagnosis is made by : blood test , urine test , ultrasound abdomen and MRI if necessary. Treatment for appendicitis in children include : Laproscopic Surgery to remove the appendix is the best option followed by antibiotics and i.v.fluids.
