Esophageal varices :
Esophageal varices are swollen, weakened veins of the esophageal lining. These esophageal varices rupture and cause gastrointestinal bleeding and blood loss. This presents as tired and lightheaded, which is a sign of low blood pressure, vomiting in blood, blood in stool, pale complexion and a feeling of weakness. Hypovolemic shock may occur due to severe blood loss. The symptoms of esophageal varices are a fast heart rate, fast breathing, sweating, anxiety, cold and clammy skin, confusion and loss of consciousness. Portal hypertension causes esophageal varices which in turn occur due to liver cirrhosis, blood clots, enlarged spleen, granulomas of the liver and other heart conditions. Esophageal varices are treated by various options, including supportive care like IV fluids, blood transfusion, IV medications like octreotide, vasopressin, and somatostatin, variceal band ligation, mechanical ventilation and antibiotics to prevent infections.
