Interventional Cardiologist :
An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease by minimal invasion, typically through catheters. Rather than cutting open the chest, interventional cardiologists access the heart from the point where the blood vessels open into the body. The procedures they usually do include angioplasty (opening the blocked arteries) and placing stents (small tubes) to keep the arteries open and even repairing heart valves. Most of these procedures are carried out in an attempt to control the conditions associated with coronary artery disease, heart attacks, or valve disorders. The interventional cardiologist assumes an amazingly crucial role when rapid intervention is called for to re-establish blood flow to the heart in the event of a heart attack. Patients are usually discharged much earlier from the hospital following the procedure than most other surgeries. However lifestyle modification with medicines is generally recommended and adopted later on to keep the heart healthy. A cardiologist after doing his master's in cardiology does a training course in interventional cardiology and thereafter comes to be known as an interventional cardiologist.
