Vesicovaginal Fistula :
A vesicovaginal fistula is usually described as an abnormal connection between the bladder and vagina through which urine may continuously leak from the bladder into the vagina. It can also result from complications from any surgical process, side effect of cancer radiation therapy, and sometimes infections. Women with vesicovaginal fistula suffer from constant wetness, an offensive discharge, and vulvar irritation or infections bringing discomfort and social distress in the vaginal area. Diagnosis is done by an physical examination, Xray or CT scan.Methods of treatment for a vesicovaginal fistula basically involve surgical repairs where the doctor closes up the fistula to attain normalcy. The methods of surgery are either through abdomen or vagina, depending on whether the fistula is sizable and located centrally or outside the vagina. Generally patient is advised rest as much as possible after surgery, intake of fluids should be increased adequately to maintain hydration, and if any catheter is applied, that should be kept until the bladder heals perfectly. Regular follow-up usually heals all wounds fully.
