Strabismus :
Strabismus, commonly known as cross-eyed or wall-eyed, is the condition in which eyes are not aligned in the proper position, when one looks at an object. It could either be constant or even intermittent and affects one or both of the eyes. Starbismus can occur due to an imbalance in the muscles around the eye, neurological conditions, or genetic predispositions. General symptoms consist of double vision and impaired depth perception and focusing. Children can also suffer from the effects of this condition in what is referred to as "lazy eye" if uncorrected until later.
Diagnosis generally consists of a comprehensive ophthalmological examination, including assessments of eye alignment, ability to track objects when they move, and visual acuity. The treatment depends upon the degree and etiology of strabismus. Strabismus may be treated with only spectacles or orthoptic therapy and surgical intervention in the correction of muscle imbalance. Pediatric ophthalmologists and optometrists play an important key role in the diagnosis and management of strabismus. Importantly early treatment has been shown to have a positive influence on outcomes and visual development in children. Follow-up treatment should therefore be tailored.
