Retinoblastoma :
It's an infrequent form of eye cancer that begins primarily in young children, under five years of age. This eye cancer begins in the light sensitive layer at the back of the eye known as the retina because of genetic mutations. It may present with one of the following like appearance of whiteness inside the pupil, often described as "cat's eye," crossed inward eyes, blur vision, redness or swelling of the eye. This would determine the size and position of the tumor through a full eye examination, ultrasound, MRI, or CT scans. Because the treatments may vary according to the stage of cancer diagnosed within the eye, the treatment stages would be different. Treatment may be in the form of chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor, laser treatment, cryotherapy, and enucleation-complete removal of the affected eye if it's severe. Pediatric oncologists and ophthalmologists are specialty physicians who care for retinoblastoma, guiding their care toward trying to preserve as much vision as possible but also with thoughtful consideration of treatment overall. Early detection does provide a key advantage, therefore, regular eye exams in pediatric practice are important for children at risk.
