Perthes disease :

Perthe's disease is a condition in which blood supply to the head of the femur in the hip joint is lost leading to bone destruction. It is often seen children (male>females) and may occur on one side(more common) or both the hips. Although the exact cause of Perthes disease is unknown the risk factors include genetics, injury or trauma, blood clotting disorders(Protein C or Protein S deficiency), low socioeconomic status, low birth weight, delayed skeletal maturity etc. The signs and symptoms include pain in the hip joint, limping, favoring the healthy side,limited mobility,muscle wasting,unequal leg length etc. Management is depends upon the age (younger children have better prognosis) and progression of the disease from braces, traction or surgical intervention.
