Pericarditis :
Pericarditis is described as inflammation of the pericardium, a structure that surrounds the heart. Pericarditis is categorized into several types, namely, acute, chronic, constrictive, infectious, idiopathic, traumatic, uremic, and malignant pericarditis. The major symptom of pericarditis is sharp and stabbing chest pain, which may worsen while swallowing, coughing, taking deep breaths, or lying flat and gets better while sitting and leaning forward. The other presenting complaints of pericarditis are pain in the back or left shoulder, difficulty in breathing while lying down, anxiety or fatigue, dry cough, fever, swelling of the legs, feet, and ankles, and palpitations. Pericarditis occurs primarily due to factors like kidney failure, complications of an infection, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, injury to the chest, tumors like lymphoma, scleroderma, and familial Mediterranean fever. The treatment methods to manage pericarditis include options like taking medications, draining the fluid if there is a fluid buildup, and surgical intervention, in serious cases.
