Otosclerosis :
Otosclerosis is a common medical condition characterized by irregular bone growth in the bones of the middle ear, such as stapes and cochlea. This abnormal bone growth restricts the passage of sound which causes moderate to severe hearing impairment. Additionally, this condition can also be associated with balance issues, tinnitus, vertigo and sensation of ear fullness. It can caused due to several factors such as genetic mutations, viral infections, autoimmune conditions, and hormonal imbalances. An ENT Surgeon clinically evaluates the symptoms and investigates with an audiogram, tympanogram, and CT scan to confirm the diagnosis. The treatment is specific to the individual's condition which includes use of hearing aids to amply the sound, surgical procedures such as stapedectomy and stapedotomy, and installation of cochlear implant. Regular follow-ups with the ENT Surgeon as scheduled is mandatory to avoid worsening of the hearing loss.
