Nose bleed :
In medical terminology nose bleed is also known as epistaxsis. Nose bleed is mostly seen among children, adults, pregnant women, patients who are on antiplatelets or anticoagulants and patients with bleeding disorders. Nose bleed can be due to breakage of the tiny capillaries of the nose or bleed in the larger vessel of the nose which leads to heavy bleeding and needs an immediate attention. Some of the causes for nose bleed are uncontrolled blood pressure, nasal tumors, deviated nasal septum, infections, nasal polyps, surgeries pertaining to face and maxilla and alcohol abuse. Diagnosis is made by a thorough history taking which may include the duration and amount of nose bleed, and a physical examination. Investigations which might be suggested by an ENT specialist include X-ray, MRI, CT scan and basic blood investigations. Applying an ice pack would be the first choice to control the bleeding before taking the patient to the ENT specialist. Some of the treatment options available for nose bleed includes nasal packing, ligation, cauterization, and surgery if needed.
