Nasal Polyp :
Nasal polyps are soft benign growths that arise from the mucosa of the nasal passage or sinuses consequent to chronic inflammation. Nasal polyps may be part and parcel of patients suffering from asthma, allergies, sinus infection, cystic fibrosis, amongst other conditions. The common symptoms that an individual has nasal polyps includes nasal congestion, loss of smell or taste, runny nose, face pains or pressure, and snoring amongst others. Other presentations can be headache or chronic sinusitis. General physical examination is done on the patient prior to other studies, such as nose endoscopy and imaging studies like CT scan that will help in assessing the size and location of the polyps.
Treatments include using corticosteroid nasal sprays in order to reduce the inflammatory swelling and size of polyps. Other treatments can either be oral corticosteroids or in rare cases, surgery for the removal of huge polyps. Periodical follow-up by a ENT surgeon is however important in monitoring the symptoms and proper management.
