Mitral valve disease :
The two chambers on the left side of the heart have a valve between them, and this valve is called the mitral valve. This valve may not close tightly enough, leading to a backward leakage of blood. Sometimes, the flaps of the valve become stiff and fuse together, causing a narrowing of the valve opening. These conditions fall under the umbrella of mitral valve disease. Mitral valve disease does not always cause symptoms. But in some cases, it can cause breathlessness, irregular heartbeat and tiredness. This type of disease may be present since birth, or acquired later in life due to infections, auto-immune diseases and other heart conditions. It can be diagnosed using tests like ECG and cardiac MRI. The disease can be treated with a combination of medicines and lifestyle changes. However, if the problem with the mitral valve is severe, or if the condition keeps getting worse, then surgery may be recommended.
