Lump in the Neck :
A lump in the neck is a growth or swelling that develops in the neck region of an individual and is not a dangerous condition in most cases. When the lymph nodes present in the neck enlarge due to an infection, a lump forms. The primary causative factors of neck lumps include ear infections, dental infections, strep throat, sinus infections, bacterial infections and tonsillitis. Thyroid problems, infections, cysts, epidermoid cysts, goitre, and cancers also sometimes present as a lump in the neck. Neck lumps also occur because of active infections like toxoplasmosis, scratch disease, actinomycosis and systemic infections like mononucleosis, HIV, tuberculosis and mumps. The other serious causes of a lump in the neck include cancers such as lymphoma, basal cell carcinoma, lipoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The significant signs that are not to be missed when there is a lump in the neck are the lump being hard or large, difficulty in swallowing, sores or growths in the mouth and the formation of a new lump.
