Ligament Injuries :
Ligament injuries occur when powerful, fibrous tissues, which connect bones of a joint are overstretched or even torn. In most cases this is the result of sudden movements or great force involved during sporting activities, falls or accidents. Early signs of a ligamentous injury are immediate pain, swelling, bruising, and instability of the joint which can cause problems with movements or weight-bearing. Grades of injuries that rupture the ligaments are classified along degrees like Grade I - mildest, it involves stretching without tearing, Grade II - partial tears, and Grade III - complete ruptures.
Diagnosis typically comes through an examination of the physical form along with imaging studies, like an MRI scan, to determine the extent of the injury. Treatment ranges from as simple as RICE-rest, ice, compression, and elevation-for milder injuries and moves on to more extensive forms of bracing and physical therapy. Whole ligament tears generally must be surgically repaired.
